Difficulty Scale

At Birds of the Ayers, we rate the ease and difficulty of our kits on a simple scale, where Super-Simple is as easy as it gets and Challenging+ is the hardest you'll find.

• Super-Simple –  (watch for a kit so simple, your kid brother could do it)
  
• Simple – easiest kits we make!
• Simple+ – easy but requires a bit more attention
• Moderate – a little bit harder, easy, but not quite as simple
• Challenging – Now we're getting complicated...
• Challenging+ – Oh boy!

While our simple kits have been enjoyed by all ages, we do recommend adult supervision for all levels.
Simple works very well for 5+, but we've known some daddy-son pairs to do well as young as age 2!
Simple+ may be better for 7+, bit more concentration needed (more pounding needed, or smaller parts)
Moderate may be good for 9+, but again, depends on your child, their abilities (and how much you'll be helping verse them doing the pounding themselves).

Gable Style Birdhouse

This is the kit that started it all!  The first birdhouse kit I designed and the design from which all subsequent kits have sprung.  This birdhouse kit is a classic gable style house with a 1 1/2” diameter entry hole, and perch.  It will look great hanging from the branch of your favorite tree.  The Gable Style birdhouse is easy to build, rating “Simple” on our difficulty scale.  Made with 1x knotty pine lumber so your birdhouse will be sturdy and stand the test of time.  Looks great painted or in the raw.

This kit includes detailed instructions and enough nails to assemble your birdhouse, plus a few extra, just in case.  Pilot holes have been drilled into the pieces of your kit to insure proper nail placement and ease of nailing.

Gable Bird Feeder

This bird feeder is a companion to our Gable Style birdhouse; featuring a gable roof, 1 1/2” decorative holes on each end and open sides - just enough space to fit a scoop of your favorite birdseed.  Our Bird Feeder kit’s classic shape and compact design will look great anywhere, whether hanging from the limb of a backyard tree, or the eve of an apartment balcony.  The Bird Feeder kit is easy to build, rating “Simple” on our difficulty scale.  Made with 1x knotty pine lumber so your bird feeder will be sturdy and stand the test of time.  Looks great painted or in the raw.

Shed Roof Birdhouse 

This plucky little bird house features a shed roof and an 1 1/2” entry hole in the front.  Perfect for hanging flush to the side of a shed or house, from a tall pole or against the trunk of your favorite tree.  The Shed Roof birdhouse kit is easy to build, but adds a slight degree of difficulty over our Gable Style Birdhouse or Gable Feeder, rating “Simple+” on our difficulty scale.  Made with 1x knotty pine lumber so your birdhouse will be sturdy and stand the test of time.  Looks great painted or in the raw.

Deluxe Shed Roof Birdhouse

This large kit is our most practical birdhouse, standing nearly a foot tall with an elegant sloping roof and a side clean-out feature to make cleaning up old nest debris a breeze – since not all birds are good at doing their own Spring cleaning!  The Deluxe Shed Roof birdhouse rates “Moderate” on our difficulty scale, do to its size and additional features.  But don’t let that deter you, its construction is simple and instructions easy to follow.  Perfect for the older child (or adult) who wants a small challenge and something more substantial to show for their time.  The roof slopes at a graceful 45º angle and has a 11/2” diameter entry hole.  The side clean-out comes with a leather pull for opening and an L-screw catch for keeping the side closed when in use. Made with 1x knotty pine lumber so your birdhouse will be sturdy and stand the test of time.  Looks great painted or in the raw.

Treasure (Gem) Box

Our Gem box is a gem of a box. Sturdy and compact, it’s 7 1/2” wide by 4 7/8” tall, with leather hinges and ornate tacks.  It’s great for storing precious memories  and mementos of all shapes and sizes.  The Gem box rates “Moderate” on our difficulty scale.  Easy to construct, however, it has the most hardware of all our kits – 24 nails, 12 tacks – it can be a good workout.  Made with 1x knotty pine lumber so your birdhouse will be sturdy and stand the test of time.  Looks great painted or in the raw.

Suet Feeder

Our Suet Feeder is designed to hold two suet cakes and is made to hang from a tree limb or from a shepherds hook (5’ high or higher).  Its roof slides up along the mounting wire to allow for refilling the feeder.  The sides are made of half-inch hardware cloth allowing for a convenient place for smaller birds to cling to while pecking away at the suet cake, yet making it difficult for larger pest species to get a grip.  Even squirrels will find it difficult to stay on with the pitch of the roof.  The feeders lozenge shape makes it nearly pest proof.  The Suet Feeder adds a degree of difficulty with its mixed media construction, rating “Challenging” on our difficulty scale.  Made with 1x knotty pine lumber and half-inch by half-inch hardware cloth.  Your suet feeder will be sturdy and stand the test of time.  Good for ages 8 and up.
